Today Suriya turned 27. She was married at 19. Last Friday, on Sep. 14, her husband of 8 years, Mohammed, was killed by Israeli tank shelling on the border of Khan Younis, along with nine other Palestinians.
Her husband-Mohammed, used to work in Israel as a construction worker, building settlements for his enemy on the very land he was exiled from in 1948. He had a steady income but lost his job in 2000, at the beginning of the Intifada, along with 300,000 other Palestinians.
After three years of trying to have a baby, Suriya and her husband finally got pregnant in 2002. But her husband was not working and they relied mostly on hand outs, which meant Suriay wasn't getting the nutrition she needed for herself or her baby. Suriya's gave birth to a baby girl who suffered from anemia and mal-nutrition. She passed away when she was 6 months old.
Suriya didn't get pregnant again until this year. Both her and her husband were very excited.
Today was Suriya's 27th birthday; last Friday her husband was killed and yesterday she miscarried her three-month old fetus.

i cannot even imagine her despair. i am sitting at my keyboard weeping. there are no words for that kind of grief.
